Echoa (05/12/2012)

A fantastic piece which really surprised me in every sense of the word.

Thomas Guerry and Camille Rocailleux are the Choreographer and Musician respectively, and after seeing this, they're also a nifty percussionist and wonderful dancer, to add to their fantastic and extensive skillset. They dance and drum with two others, making music from the simplest things - from running a hand along a pole, to panting from exertion.

On a sparse set, looking almost like the backstreets of Paris or Brazil, the foursome wake from a dream and perform beautifully in a far-too-short 55 minute piece which explores all of the beats which affect our lives and which we respond to from day to say.

A head to head between the two drummers leads to excitment, which filters through the room explosively, everyone responding to the music and dance in their own ways. The audience is almost as much of the part of the performance as the performers, providing a fair part of the energy.

Well-executed and well-imagined, its easy to see why Echoa has had such a wonderful life, and why it'll continue to get bums on seats.

Runs through December 16th 2012
Beautiful, soulful and affecting
